2026 Aquaculture in Shared Water 2.0: Business of Shellfish Aquaculture

About

Aquaculture in Shared Waters (AQSW) 2.0: Shellfish is a community-based, 1.5 month training program designed to support current shellfish farmers who have been operating an aquaculture business for 1 to 10 years in Maine. The course will cover important aspects of operating and managing a shellfish farming company at an intermediate to advanced level. Participants will learn from leading industry, regulatory, and scientific experts on key topic areas including:


  • Financial Management
  • Risk Management & Insurance
  • HR & Hiring
  • Supply Chains & Shipping
  • Safety on the Water
  • Public Health Best Practices Review
  • Emerging Species & Innovations in Gear, 
  • Energy Reduction, Solar Power, and Electrification on the Farm
  • In addition to providing classroom and hands-on learning opportunities, participation in this course also involves receiving 10 hours of business mentorship for free!


The 2026 AQSW 2.0: Shellfish course is hosted in partnership with the Aquaculture in Shared Waters training program, which has helped people start and improve their aquaculture businesses in Maine for over a decade.

Details for 2026 AQSW 2.0: Shellfish

This series is hosted in partnership with the Aquaculture in Shared Waters training program, which has helped people start and improve their aquaculture businesses in Maine for over a decade. Learn more and apply to join the 2.0 Shellfish cohort below.

This course is being offered for current shellfish aquaculture farmers living in Maine. Given that this is an intermediate to advanced level course, the target audience is farmers with 1 to 10 years of experience. We encourage applications for this program from:

  • Shellfish farmers who are looking to expand their business
  • Shellfish farmers who are interested in honing business management skills
  • Shellfish farmers who would like to explore income diversification 
  • Shellfish farmers who would like to have additional networking opportunities


The course is currently free of charge thanks to funding support from a U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture grant. The course will run from March to April 2026 and you must be a full-time resident of Maine to participate. Shellfish farmers are encouraged to apply. Farmers focused on seaweed will have an opportunity to attend a separate AQSW 2.0 course in the fall of 2026.


Participants in this workshop series will:

  • Gain understanding of intermediated aquaculture topics, including: Financial Management, Risk Management & Insurance, HR & Hiring, and Supply Chains & Shipping
  • Revisit crucial public health topics and updates for the shellfish industry 
  • Receive hands-on, on-the-water safety training 
  • Network and connect with instructors, experts, and other shellfish aquaculturists
  • Explore emerging species (urchins!?) and novel gear opportunities (electrification!?)

AQSW 2.0: Shellfish Course Information and dates

The course consists of 6 virtual classes (delivered via zoom) and 2 in-person field days. Classes will be held weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6-8 pm beginning March 4, 2026 and ending April 15, 2026 (except April 1st). Field days will occur on March 27th and April 17th from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The nuts and bolts of getting your products from Point A to Point B, and how that influences how far you can get into the supply chain. 


March 25th, 6-8 PM

Current and emerging issues that growers should be paying attention to on the farm and post-harvest. Regulations, good practices, record-keeping, equipment and its use.
