The 2026 Aquaculture in Shared Waters Workshop Series is designed to support graduates of the AQSW Program as they continue to grow and strengthen their aquaculture businesses in Maine.
This series of five workshops is designed for current owners and operators aquaculture businesses looking to improve understanding of emergent topics including: hosting farm tours, succession planning, navigating lease hearings, and more. The series will encourage learning through knowledge-sharing to build community and lasting networks of collaboration in the aquaculture industry. The workshops are free of charge to participants and location will vary, with four taking place in-person and one occurring on zoom. Workshop applications are open to individuals who have previously completed any Aquaculture in Shared Waters course offering (such as AQSW 1.0, AQSW 2.0, AQSW Bootcamp, AQSW Strong Bodies, Strong Minds). This 2026 AQSW Workshop Series is hosted in partnership with the Aquaculture in Shared Waters training program, which has helped people start and improve their aquaculture businesses in Maine since 2012.
This series of stand-alone workshops provides emergent, topic-specific learning opportunities among peers for members of Maine’s aquaculture industry. Topic areas for the 2026 series include expanding operations, diversifying income streams, and planning for long-term succession.
These workshops are offered to Maine residents who have previously participated in or completed an Aquaculture in Shared Waters program and who currently own/operate a bivalve farm in Maine (or those who plan to do so in the near future). Participants may choose which workshops they would like to attend.
These workshops are stand-alone events: participants are encouraged to attend the workshops that most interest them.
To participate, you must be a full-time resident of Maine and have completed an Aquaculture in Shared Waters program. The series is free of charge to all participants and runs from May to November 2026. You may only attend the workshops you specifically apply for as spaces are limited (see application form).

Tuesday, May 12th, 10AM-2PM. Lunch included.
This workshop focuses on diversifying farm revenue through events, agritourism, and direct sales. Participants will learn about insurance, licensing for catering and mobile operations, liability waivers, and DMR/Coast Guard regulations for farm tours, along with practical guidance on planning and running successful events and on-farm experiences.
Friday, August 28th, 10:45-1:15.
Participants may join a Damariscotta River Cruise, where they can network with others, see working farms, and enjoy fresh oysters for a beautiful morning out on the water.
Thursday, September 24th, 6PM-8PM.
Held online, this workshop focuses on planning for the future of your aquaculture business. Participants will explore strategies for transitioning ownership, preparing the next generation of operators, and maintaining business continuity, with practical guidance on financial, legal, and operational considerations.
Friday, October 23rd, 10AM-2PM.
This workshop provides an in-depth overview of the aquaculture lease application process in Maine. Topics include the 12 M.R.S.A. §6072 factors, site and gear planning, riparian communication, and application development, with the goal of helping participants to navigate the leasing process and strengthen their applications.
Friday, November 13th, 10AM-2PM.
Step into your next aquaculture lease hearing with confidence. This workshop will provide an overview for navigating lease hearings. Topics include analyzing public comments, preparing witnesses and rebuttals, cross-examining opposition, and managing hearing demeanor, equipping participants to confidently present their case.

Anne is Executive Director of the Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center, aquaculture researcher and project manager, and a marine educator based in Orland, Maine. Her career in aquaculture has brought her around the world, from the coasts of Scotland to Maine.

Antoine is a recent graduate from the University of New England (UNE) who works on education and workforce projects at MAIC and the Washington County Community College (WCCC).
