2026 Strong Bodies, Strong Minds

About

The 2026 Aquaculture Workshop Series is designed to build skills and center community among active and aspiring aquaculturists in Maine.

This series was originally designed as an evidenced-based training to meet the needs of women aquaculturists. This year the application is open to anyone. This series will focus on building skills such as seamanship and on-the-water safety, gear and labor practices for different body types, social license, and human relations support for employers and employees. In addition to skill building, the series focuses on knowledge-sharing and co-learning to empower participants and build community. The series is free of charge to participants and each of the three workshops will take place in-person (including 2 overnights), with opportunities for networking and community-building after each workshop.

This 2026 Aquaculture Workshop Series is hosted in partnership with the Aquaculture in Shared Waters training program, which has helped people start and improve their aquaculture businesses in Maine for over a decade.

February - April 2026

2026 series details

This series is hosted in partnership with the Aquaculture in Shared Waters training program, which has helped people start and improve their aquaculture businesses in Maine for over a decade. Learn more and apply to join the 2026 cohort below.

These workshops are open to Maine residents with interest or experience in Maine’s aquaculture industry. Direct aquaculture experience is not required; we anticipate accepting students across a wide range of experience and backgrounds.

We especially encourage applications from:

  • Those who operate or work for aquaculture businesses
  • Those with a working waterfront background who are interested in getting more involved in aquaculture
  • Alumni of previous Aquaculture in Shared Waters offerings or other aquaculture workforce development programs, whether currently active in the industry or seeking to enter
  • Members of Maine-based aquaculture associations or other networking groups

The course is free of charge to all participants and runs from February to April 2026. You must be a full-time resident of Maine to participate. In order to encourage community-building and connections within the student cohort, we will prioritize applicants who can commit to attending all three of the workshops.

Participants in this workshop series will:

  • Build skills in seamanship, ergonomics, employee management, conflict resolution, and more
  • Network and connect with instructors, experts, and other aquaculturists
  • Be empowered to share experiences and learnings with their student cohort

2026 workshop Information and dates

This skill-building series consists of six workshops, uniquely targeted for women on the water. Virtual workshops are 2 hours, and will be held via Zoom. In-person workshops are day-long deep dives, each with two dates and locations available for participants to choose from. Learn more below.

February 26th, Time TBD. Optional dinner following

Come meet your fellow participants, build community with your cohort! In this workshop, you’ll learn about the science behind strength training and develop practices that will help your body sustain the physical demands of aquaculture farming.

March 19th, all day. Option to spend the night at the Darling Marine Center and tour a sea farm the following morning

Participate in an interactive workshop designed to help you think through how to build trust and understanding of your aquaculture operations in your own community. Learn strategies and available programming and support to help you manage conflict, whether it’s in your community or among your employees. Build your confidence in managing and supporting your team.

April 9th, all day. Option to spend the night at the Downeast Institute and tour a sea farm the following morning

In this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to build hands-on skills in coastal navigation, knot-tying and splicing, and on-the-water safety. Discuss your maritime questions and concerns with instructors and fellow participants as we build a stronger working waterfront together.
